WHAT IS SMART PAPER TECHNOLOGY?
SMART PAPER TECHNOLOGY
You’ll be hearing more about this innovative paper product
so here’s the heads up on what it is and what it can do.
Smart paper technology combines the reliability and tactile qualities of printed paper with digital technology using sensors and tiny, lightweight tags to send and receive information. While it’s not yet widely available, this amazing and useful technology is rapidly becoming an option you’ll want to know about.
How does it work?
The radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags are so small they can be embedded in paper, applied with ink, or stuck on without creating any extra bulk. They can also be produced at a very small cost, around 10c a tag.
Applications
We’re just getting started on this fantastic technology. These are some of the applications currently in use.
website links and product information that open on your phone
interactive books and educational publications
medical diagnostic tools
instant transfer of a contact card
printed batteries
microchips that send information to the Cloud
conductive ink pens that draw RFID antennas
tags that recognise the difference between movement such as touch or a hand passing over them
instantly updating or uploading data to digital records
scanning paper tests for instant upload, marking and better exam security
embedding an ID card for instant access or denial around a building
Recording in paper forms means that onerous and potential erroneous administration and reporting routines can be reduced by 72%. Implementation and maintenance is also faster and more affordable compared to any other technology.
How is it used?
Smart paper can be used for any print product. A flyer or poster could include the capability of leading a reader to a company’s website to find out more about a product, a business card could direct a phone straight to your LinkedIn profile, the product information handout at an expo could contain a tag to a sign-up form or a retail product could have a security device embedded in the tag that can be tracked.
What’s next?
More than we can imagine! Some of the current development work includes:
Near-field communication (NFC) technology that allows the information to be refreshed
Sensors that show food quality
Tracking transport information on goods to show where delays occur
Scanning a trolley full of items and debiting a card without going through a checkout
Protecting manufacturers against illegal product copies
Sports event timing with instant results to the website or social media
And a whole lot more once this technology connects to the possibilities of AI
