7 COLOURS THAT MAKE US HAPPY
If you look at a black and white image, it can take you a moment longer to recognise what it is than if that image is in full colour.
We're hard wired to respond to the stimulus of colour.
Different cultures, genders, and personalities respond differently to the same colour
but those differences narrow right down when it comes to the colours that make us feel happy.
Visible colours have wavelengths that produce electrical impulses that have an effect on our bodies.
They even work when you’re asleep.
We've delved into the psychology of colour and created a list of the 7 most common colours that
prompt feelings of happiness and why those colours work.
YELLOW
The colour of the sun. Yellow stimulates happiness and optimism. It’s an excellent attention-grabber
because of its brightness.
GREEN
Associated with nature. Green is a peaceful, natural colour that evoked feelings of rest, safety, freshness
and hope. It’s also the easiest colour on the eyes and is soothing to the mind.
BLUE
The most popular favourite colour. Blue is the colour of the sky. Along with green,
it’s the colour we see most often in nature. It creates feelings of stability and serenity.
BROWN
Reminds us of tree trunks. Brown is a natural colour that prompts feelings of stability
and the natural, tactile world.
PINK
Associated with childhood and sweetness. Pink is generally seen as a feminine colour so it can evoke
a sense of nurturing and softness. It also softens aggression and has a calming effect.
ORANGE
The colour of enthusiasm. Orange is a stimulating colour that creates liveliness, but use it sparingly
because it’s also people’s least favourite colour.
WHITE
Communicates freshness and purity. Not technically a colour but considered one by many,
white is the colour of cleanliness and new beginnings. It’s easy to look at so it feels safe.
COLOUR THERAPY
Visible colours have wavelengths that produce electrical impulses that have an affect on our bodies. They even work when you’re asleep.
Hospitals use blue light on babies with jaundice to help purify their blood. (Stanford Medicine). A study published by PubMed Central found that lights with blue in them improve work performance and mood, and another by the American Society of Anesthesiologists found that looking through green glasses reduces anxiety for chronic pain sufferers.
COLOUR IN MARKETING
Congruity is the term applied to how well the colours of what we’re seeing match the object. If our brains don’t recognise a connection, we’re less likely to find that product appealing. It’s why all those bottles of water for sale have blue in their labels. Water in a bright yellow bottle doesn’t match what its selling and would make us suspicious of that product.
